2008
Academic Calendar
Classes for Winter Quarter 2008 will begin on Thursday, January 3, and follow the regular Thursday schedule.
On Friday, January 4, students will follow their Winter 2008 Monday class schedule. Courses scheduled for Fridays will not meet on January 4, since classrooms will be occupied by teachers and students attending their Monday schedule of courses.
Beginning Monday, January 7, all classes will meet at their usual times and locations.
Background Information
Moving commencement from Fridays
to Sundays, and eliminating early senior finals created some unique
calendar challenges for 2008. If regular calendar guidelines were
followed for Summer Quarter 2008, it would be only 8 weeks long without
having commencement on Labor Day weekend; and commencement for Winter
Quarter would fall on Easter Sunday. Many people expressed concern
about those conflicts, both in terms of the participants and those who
work on commencement days. Many options were considered - all with
significant negatives.
After discussions held by the
institutional governance structure, such as the Faculty Senate's Council
on Academic Affairs, Faculty Council, the Council on Enrollment and
Student Progress (the University committee with calendar
responsibility), and departmental and college representatives, these
groups approved a proposal to have a slightly abbreviated Winter
Quarter, and a 9-week Summer Quarter for 2008. This proposal has also
been reviewed by President's Cabinet.
Winter Quarter will be 9 weeks,
plus two instructional days. Students will return from the December
break on Thursday, January 3, rather than waiting until Monday, January
7. Students are expected to attend their Monday schedule of classes on Friday, January 4, to accommodate the "lost instructional day" on the Martin Luther King holiday.
