History

In 2000, Congress passed a bill (H.R.6, Section 489b) that requires colleges and universities to make voter registrations forms “widely available to students at their institution.” The regulation requires and Ohio State’s practice has been to do this before Presidential and gubernatorial elections.

Since passage, the University Registrar’s Office has distributed forms to all current and prospective students through the Master Schedule Course Bulletin (Master Schedule). Master Schedules were mailed to each student via US mail or campus for those in the residence halls. Beginning in 2002, the University Registrar eliminated mailing of the Master Schedule and plans to eliminate the publication within the next few quarters.

The Ohio Secretary of State’s has a web request page for voter registration forms. State regulations also require that the forms be provided by the Secretary of State (i.e. we may not reproduce, scan, etc the forms).

Distribution Plan

The Office of the University Registrar will email all currently enrolled students on the first week of Autumn classes with a message about voter registration including a link to the Secretary of State’s website and a list of sites on campus where forms may be picked up. This will be continued each autumn quarter.

The Undergraduate Student Government will also be holding a voter registration drive as one of their fall programs. They will have voter registration forms available at sites around campus and will also publicize that sites established by the Registrar’s Office.
