Social Security Number Policy

It is the policy of the Office of the University Registrar to neither send nor receive social security numbers (SSNs) in an unsecured format via email.

Direct your students NOT TO PUT THEIR SSNs on their answer sheets.

If more than a couple of your students printed or bubbled their SSNs on their answer sheets, we will not accept them for scoring.

An alternative to SSNs that still uniquely identifies your students is the OSU username (lastname.number@osu.edu). Consider having students bubble only their last names in the NAME field of their answer sheets, and the number portion of their usernames in the IDENTIFICATION NUMBER field.

Another alternative is to assign a unique numeric code to each student (perhaps their serial position on your roster) that they can bubble in the IDENTIFICATION NUMBER field.
